Richard John Baker was born in Montreal, Canada. His father was a part time musician, and recognized Richard's talent at the age of three,when he began playing melodies on the piano which he had heard on the radio. He gave his first public performance at the age of five, and began to play professionally in his dad's twenty piece dance band when he was 12.
