Fantastic news for kids/possibly the worst news for parents who are just so, so tired today from THR’s Borys Kit: Hotel Transylvania 4 is in the works over at Sony Pictures Animation and currently slated to hit theaters on December 22, 2021. The series—which is toplined by Adam Sandler as Count Dracula and counts names like Andy Samberg, Selena Gomez, and Steve Buscemi among its cast—has been a surprising success for SPA since the original Hotel Transylvania banked $148 million at the domestic box office. The latest entry, last year’s Hotel Transylvania: Summer Vacation, took in $167.5 million but Hotel Transylvania 2 remains SPA’s highest-earner domestically with $169.7 million, topping titles like Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and Goosebumps. (Summer Vacation is the winner worldwide, where it took in a massive $528.6 million.)
It’ll be interesting to see if Stars Wars: Clone Wars creator Genndy Tartakovsky—who has directed all three films in the franchise—will return for the fourth entry. When Collider spoke to the filmmaker for Summer Vacation, Tartakovsky noted he wasn’t even going to come back for that film amid the Sony e-mail hack.
“Meanwhile, we’re trying to get this movie done, and so it was a very tumultuous end, and everybody got fired and replaced. Right. Almost at the very end, so Tom Rothman came in, Kristine Belson came in, and so all of a sudden everybody that you were making the movie with is gone, and now there’s all these new people, and the movie’s successful, thank god, and then now what. It was a tough experience making it, and so I was like, “Well, I’m just out. This will be easy. I wouldn’t do this under these conditions again.”
Tartakovsky evidently decided to return for Summer Vacation when inspiration struck while, appropriately enough, he was on summer vacation with his family. But time will tell whether the studio can woo the animator back for yet another round with the spookiest of cartoon crews.
